7/26/2007: Cape Town’s film industry booms (Published by Catherine Daraspe)
According to a study commissionned by the Cape Film Commission Western Cape’s film industry has contributed 3.5 billion Rand (approx. 370 million EUR) to South Africa’s GDP during the financial year 2006/2007 and realised a total turnover of 2.65 billion Rand (approx. 280 million EUR). Over this period the region produced 30 long films and 600 commercials.

The study estimates that the industry created the equivalent of 6.000 full time jobs, 77% of which are situated in Cape Town. Furthermore 2.500 indirect jobs were generated, especially in gastronomy and hotel business. In total, the study states, “between 7.9 and 8.2 direct and indirect jobs are created in South Africa for every 1 million Rand spend on production.” The study was carried out by Barry Standish and Antony Boting from the University of Cape Town’s Graduate School of Business.
