| 6/1/2007: Singapore: the future belongs to those who invest in creative economy | (Published by Catherine Daraspe) | The Singapore Ministry of Information, Communication and the Arts (MICA) has been working for a few years now on making the country become an important creative hub. “The new architects of the global economy are those who apply their imagination, creativity and knowledge to generate new ideas and create new value”, it says on the Ministry website.
The country’s Economic Review Committee also counts the creative industries, besides education and healthcare, to the three most promising service areas. In order to support the industry more intensively and more efficiently, MICA is working out a Creative Industry Development Strategy involving all relevant government agencies, industry players and stakeholders.
The Ministry coordinates a whole series of policies and programmes. Blueprints have already been formulated for the arts, design and media sectors. Since 2005 numerous events have been organised – among others the Global Summit for Creative Industries, Singapore Design Festival, Asia Media Festival and Creative Youth Xchange – which have provided presentation platforms for local creative entrepreneurs and raised Singapore’s creative profile.
