5/22/2007: France: Sarkozy goes for the “cultural exception”(Published by Catherine Daraspe)
During the international Cannes Films Festival, the new French culture minister Christine Albanel read out a message from the recently elected president Nicolas Sarkozy. He vowed to sustain film subsidies and to fight movie piracy. France provides direct aid to its film industry. Also a quotation system limits the number of foreign films aired on national television. Taxes on sold movie tickets allow funding new films productions. The French policy which protects the creative industries from market forces is largely known as the “cultural exception”.
